A VPN is a bad fix yes, but it points to a connection problem somewhere. One idea I've seen work is using another DNS server.

To toss my credentials out I'm a network engineer and if this was purely a server issue, everyone would be in the same boat. If this was purely a server issue, myself and many others couldn't play it is a mixture of the two. The first step in fixing it, and making this game better (or at least playable) is by admiting there is a problem. Suggesting that it's an issue with my ISP, or my friend's ISP, and his VPN, is laughable. I have perhaps 50+ multiplayer games that work just fine on this computer, and the 2nd one I tested from, and the third, and my friend's computer. Uninformed suggestions like "use a VPN" may have appeared to fix the issue for some people, because the problem is a intermittent - it comes and goes based on what is going on with the patch servers. Most likely you are not experiencing this issue becuase you've already received that 2014 patch. Solutions are not "out there", and they do not work. At this point I've proven 100% this is "a game issue": The game starts patching fine, then fails to patch on the same file, every time, and fails at the same place, everytime (The 2014.0000 patch).

I troubleshoot issues like this for a living. Then we tried using his VPN (P.I.A): Same Issue.

But for the record: I just tried from my friends house (this is on a FOURTH seperate computer), on a different ISP. It should never be required, even as a "bandaid". You are incorrect, and I repeat: a VPN is horrible advice for fixing ANY game on Steam.
